Tigard Dentist Dr. Justin Marostica of TenderCare Dental was invited to Bonny Slope Elementary to talk about dentistry. Recently the 2nd graders at Bonny Slope Elementary have been learning the basics about business. They have learned about the exchange of goods, services, and money. They also learn some of the basics like employees and marketing. It all leads to the much anticipated 2nd grade market where each students sets up shop and provides either a good or a service in exchange for “play” money.
Dr. Marostica who is a Dentist in Tigard, OR was invited to talk to the students about the business of dentistry. He explained that dentistry, for the most part, was a service and he explained what services are provided at a dental office like teeth cleanings, dental fillings, dentures, extractions, and braces. He also explained the different employees that make up a dental office like an office manager, secretary, hygienist and dental assistants.
Needless to say he was asked a host of different questions. A few students asked what was required to become a dentist, how many years of school, and if he liked to smell people’s breath. For fun, Dr. Marostica brought in a “jar of teeth”. You can imagine the interest and excitement as the 2nd graders took turns looking at all the teeth Dr. Marostica had taken out. Many exclaiming, “Wow these teeth are massive!”.
Towards the end of the presentation, Dr. Marostica handed out toothbrushes and encouraged each child to brush their teeth twice a day and to floss. He also explained the importance of biannual dental check ups. This was a great opportunity to teach kids about the business of dentistry and about proper oral hygiene. You never know but there could be a few future dentists sitting in that classroom!
